What kind of earphone plug do you know?

May 22, 2021

The 3.5mm plug is the most common for everyone, and most mobile phones and headphones are used. In the end, how many kinds of commonly used connectors are commonly used in headphones? In fact, it is not complicated at all. Let's talk about it today!

3.5mm TRS: The 3-segment 3.5mm TRS is the most common headphone plug, with left, right and ground from top to bottom, compatible with most mobile phones and DAPs.

3.5mm TRRS: Headphones with remote control function, you will find that the plug is a 4-segment TRRS, in addition to the left channel, the right channel, the ground, and a section to transmit the radio microphone signal.

3.5mm TRRS 4-segment plug for transmitting left channel, right channel, ground and radio microphone signals.

6.3mm: The plug is a 3-segment design with left channel, right channel and ground. Due to the large area occupied, in general, it is only used on home audio equipment, which is common in two-channel amplifiers, big ear cows, Karaoke microphones, and so on.

4-pin XLR: Appears on the big ear or the household ear expansion. It is a balanced plug. The left and right channels are completely separated, but the grounding is shared to achieve balanced transmission.

The 4-pin XLR balanced output jack will only appear on the home ear extension.

2.5mm TRRS: Some DAPs have balanced output jacks. The amplifier lines can be processed independently from left to right. The gain output is very sufficient, which not only makes the headphones easier to push, but also reduces the noise affected by the current, making the music more clear and pleasant. The 2.5mm TRRS balanced plug is a 4-segment structure. The positive and negative signals of the left and right channels are transmitted separately and have a grounding wire.

4.4mm: Japan Electronic Information Technology Industry Association (JEITA) announced the earphone definition standard "RC-8141C" in March, and selected the 4.4mm 5-segment as the standard for balanced headphone plugs, except for the positive and negative terminals of the left and right channels. In addition, the grounding is also independent. The 4.4mm balanced plug and socket are only used by Sony audio products. Can the new specifications unify the current chaotic balance standards? I believe it will take another year or two to see the difference.

For the time being, only 4.4mm balanced plugs are used in Sony audio products.

Lightning: Cut down the 3.5mm headphone jack from the rumored iPhone 7 until it really disappears. There are a lot of Lightning headphones in the room, as the name suggests, it is designed for iOS devices, and there is a certain degree of flexibility. The traditional 3.5mm headphone jack output is an emulation signal, which is decoded by the built-in DAC of the mobile phone and converted into an emulation signal before being transmitted to the earphone. However, the headset of the Lightning interface can place the DAC chip in the earphone. The earphone manufacturer can choose the DAC decoder chip to ensure that the earphone should have the strength.
